Performed on a dance floor flipped 90 degrees and suspended high in the air, Why? is both a tender and exhilarating aerial duet exploring themes of life, loss, surrender and acceptance in a soft and moving way.
Performed in two parts, climbing harnesses and abseil lines are used to dance a ‘vertical dance’. A powerfully haunting commissioned sound score accompanies the performance, with spoken word interspersed throughout the piece.
Originally created in 2004, 15 years on this piece was reimagined in 2019 with the same creative team and is what you will see at The Full Shebang.
A tour de force of aerial performance, delivering emotional truth in every beat
Bradley Hemmings, Artistic Director Greenwich and Docklands International Festival
Why? is supported by Without Walls and commissioned by Norfolk and Norwich Festival. Why? was re-created with generous support from Arts Council England, The Point, Fidget Feet and the Irish Aerial Creation Centre.
About Gravity & Levity
Gravity & Levity is an aerial dance company that was launched in 2003 by Artistic Director Lindsey Butcher. They create aerial dance that redefines what and where a dance floor can be both for an audience and ourselves and specialise in vertical dance performance.
Starting out as a contemporary dancer before running away with the Circus, the company came about when Artistic Director Lindsey realised that when she was dancing, she missed being aerial and vice versa. Gravity & Levity was formed to weave the two art forms together, applying a dance aesthetic to aerial suspension techniques.
