Useful information
How long are the walks?
Walks last approx. 1.5 hours followed by cake and a hot drink.
Do I need to book?
No, you can just turn up – make sure you wrap up warm and wear appropriate footwear.
Where do the walks start from?
We’ll start our walks from Sutton Lawn, meeting at Rumbles Cafe. You can download a PDF map of Mill Waters here.
What if I have a query about the walks?
Please call / text Steph on 07386 667981 or email her at stephanie@firstart.org.uk
Are the routes wheelchair accessible?
Yes, the routes around Mill Waters are wheelchair friendly but it’s worth dropping us a line if you have any concerns.
What if I require access support?
Please call / text Steph on 07386 667981 or email her at stephanie@firstart.org.uk. We will do our very best to accommodate your needs.
We will have a BSL interpreter joining us to support anyone that requires it and our project coordinator Steph, who will be at most of the walks, is also BSL Level 2.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes, well behaved dogs on leads are welcome.
Can I bring my child/children?
We are happy for people to bring newborns and babes in arms along but, unfortunately, the walks aren’t suitable for children. Part of the walking and being with others is to allow women to chat freely and, potentially, discuss themes that are not easy to discuss or appropriate for children to be around. We hope you understand.
More about Women Walking and Girl Outdoors
Women Walking is part of the Girl Outdoors Project, in partnership with Mill Waters and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Girls Outdoors is designed to help open up conversations about the barriers women face when accessing the outdoors, particularly in winter when the days are darker and the weather is colder and wetter.
We want to help empower participants by building their confidence and resilience through the creative walks and social connections made in a supportive group.
Women taking part will co-design public creative ‘interventions’ to reclaim underused or unsafe outdoor spaces, such as underpasses and parks, making them feel more welcoming and inclusive.
About the artist
Amelia Daiz is an artist and facilitator based in Nottingham.
Amelia combines walking and creativity to improve wellbeing and build a sense of community. Walking is at the core of her practice and is often combined with other medium such as drawing, printmaking, film, sculpture and poetry. Her work also explores issues such as accessibility, gender, rights to public space and environment.
She is interested in using her art projects as a platform for participants stories. She works across several venues in the East Midlands and has recently finished her post as Artist in Residence at The National Civil War Centre. She also runs a small organisation called Meanderers, dedicated to walking, creativity and wellbeing.
